Fashion icon Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, surrounded by his family. Renowned for his contributions to the fashion industry, Armani passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the world of style.
Born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, Giorgio Armani made his mark as an innovative fashion designer known for his signature style—a blend of relaxed yet luxurious ready-to-wear pieces and intricately beaded evening wear. He made designs that people wanted and built an empire on elegant style. His training with Cerrutti was evident as his designs never bowed to the whims of fashion. His designs helped introduce ease and streamlined modernity to late 20th and early 21st-century dressing, embodying the epitome of elegance.
The Armani Group announced the news of his passing, stating that a funeral chamber will be set up in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, followed by a private funeral on a date yet to be specified. Armani’s influence on fashion has been monumental; he remained steadfast in his signature style throughout his illustrious career. Over the decades, Armani softened his designs with delicate detailing, luxurious fabrics, and brighter shades within his basic beige and gray palette. His insistence on incorporating pants and jackets into women’s fashion often led critics to label his work as “androgynous.” His collections were characterized by loose volumes, an earthy color palette, and a fascination with fluid materials—marking a unique vision of masculine elegance.
Known fondly as “Re Giorgio” or “King Giorgio,” Armani was deeply involved in every aspect of his collections, overseeing details from advertising campaigns to fixing models’ hair before they walked the runway. His passing marks a significant moment in fashion history, as he was well-respected for fostering a familial atmosphere within his brand.
The Italian designer’s health had been declining in recent months, leading him to miss several Milan Fashion Week shows, including the Men’s Fashion Week in June. This was the first time in his career that he was unable to attend one of his own events, highlighting the toll of his illness.
In a heartfelt statement released by the Armani Group, the company expressed its sorrow: “With infinite sorrow, we announce the passing of our creator, founder, and tireless driving force.” They acknowledged the deep emotional void left by Armani, emphasizing his vision, passion, and dedication to the brand and its people. “In this company, we have always felt part of a family. Today, we feel the void left by the one who founded this family.”
Giorgio Armani’s impact stretched beyond the realm of fashion—his brand evolved into a global empire encompassing beauty, music, sport, and luxury hotels. The brand’s Instagram page conveyed that he worked tirelessly until his final days, demonstrating relentless curiosity and a deep connection to people. Armani was a pioneer in the fashion world, elevating red carpet fashion to new heights. He had a love film and celebrity and dressed numerous celebrities for iconic events, including Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, and Julia Roberts at the Oscars. Moreover, he designed stage outfits for Lady Gaga and costumes for notable films, such as American Gigolo and The Wolf of Wall Street.
The Armani Group commemorated their founder on September 4, 2025, emphasizing his fifty-year legacy of creativity and community support. “Giorgio Armani has always made independence, both in thought and action, his hallmark. Today and always, the company reflects this ethos,” the statement read.
In memorializing the designer, the statement captured the sentiments of many who had worked alongside him: “Together, we commit to protecting what he built and carrying on his company in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love.”
Giorgio Armani once stated, “Elegance is not about being noticed; it’s about being remembered.” His legacy will undoubtedly be remembered in the hearts of many, for he has left an indelible mark on the fashion industry that will be cherished for generations to come.
