We are truly saddened by the news of Paul Costelloe’s passing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his loving family. Paul, you will be deeply missed! Having known him for many years, ever since being introduced by Dwina Gibb, it has been a privilege to cover many of his fashion shows and to work alongside him backstage at the Against Breast Cancer Show, held at the Gibbs home, The Prebendal in Thame. While Paul will be sadly missed, his remarkable legacy lives on. Thank you, Paul, for the beautiful prints of your designs that I will cherish forever.
Paul Costelloe, the Irish-American couturier, played a significant role in defining Princess Diana’s style throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His label announced that he passed away peacefully in London after a short illness, surrounded by his wife and seven children. For more than 40 years, Costelloe led his family-run, eponymous fashion label and is survived by his wife, Anne, and their seven children.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Paul’s illustrious career began in Paris and Milan before he established his successful Paul Costelloe Collections label. A cherished name in British fashion, he was a designer of international acclaim who embraced a daring spirit.
Based in the heart of London’s fashion district, Paul Costelloe’s design studio became synonymous with luxurious, handcrafted fabrics combined with cutting-edge design, innovation, and creativity.
I first met Paul while working on catwalk shows for Robin and Dwina Gibb. At that time, Paul was presenting his Paul Costelloe Collection, while I showcased the Mark Powell Collection. The fashion shows took place in a grand marquee on the grounds of The Prebendal, Robin and Dwina’s home in Thame, Oxfordshire. Robin performed some of his popular songs with the Bee Gees, and the event raised a significant amount of money for charity. Over the years, I found both Paul and Robin to be extraordinarily talented, intelligent, and down-to-earth individuals, despite their fame, with a profound passion for life.
Paul Costelloe’s talent is showcased through his powerful and distinctive style. His expertise in toile, design, and print is evident in all his creations. His talent and strong presence are reflected in his elegant, timeless designs. As a perfectionist, Paul ensured the right choices in jewelry, styling, music, and venue for all of his shows. Fortunately, the Paul Costelloe legacy and label continue with his family.
Paul Costelloe was first invited to show at London Fashion Week in 1984 and always expressed his affection for this prestigious event.
