The fashion event of the year the 2026 Met Gala revealed its theme and dress code. Set for the first Monday in May, May 4th, 2026 this year’s gala was a true spectacle, with the theme “Costume Art” encapsulating the invitation to explore the concept that “Fashion is Art.” Co-chaired by an illustrious roster of icons including Beyoncé, Venus Williams, Nicole Kidman, and the ever-influential Anna Wintour, the gala delivered a night of unparalleled elegance and creativity.
The Met Costume Institute will showcase a breathtaking exhibit, which pairs approximately 200 art objects with 200 garments, illuminating the intrinsic relationship between fashion and art throughout history. This year’s exhibition is a celebration of the many interpretations of the dressed body through the ages, making it a fitting homage to a theme that resonates deeply within the fashion community.
The Met Gala, held annually at the esteemed Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, serves not only as a high-profile fundraiser but also as a harbinger of fashion trends. Each year, stars grace the red carpet in audacious, conversation starting looks that define the season. This year’s hosts, alongside Wintour, included Saint Laurent designer Anthony Vaccarello and actress Zoë Kravitz, who presided over a host committee committed to making this Gala an unmissable event.
The evening was a canvas on which attendees painted their artistic visions. Beyoncé stepped out in a custom Olivier Rousteing creation, a sculptural skeleton dress adorned with a cream and dusty blue feathered train that was as striking as her diamond crown, truly fit for Queen Bey herself. Similarly, Naomi Osaka captured attention in an avant-garde Robert Wun white sculptural dress featuring exaggerated shoulders, complemented by red feathers and a matching headpiece, accented with glamorous two-toned red gloves.
Anne Hathaway also made headlines, donning a custom Michael Kors strapless dress that exuded Grecian elegance. Hand-painted with a dove of peace, it embodied tranquility and grace, with Kors himself remarking, “She is the goddess of peace.”
The evening witnessed the trend of artistic self-reference, with Venus Williams donning a sparkling black off-the-shoulder gown intricately embellished with a dazzling Swarovski neckpiece that paid homage to a stunning painting of herself by artist Robert Pruitt, held at the National Portrait Gallery. Amy Sherald, another Gala host committee member, turned heads in a Thom Browne ensemble inspired by her own artwork, while singer Sabrina Carpenter opted for a striking Dior dress adorned with film strips from the classic 1954 movie Sabrina.
Added to the star-studded cast of guests were honorary co-chairs Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, alongside his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos. Vogue enlisted Emma Chamberlain, model Ashley Graham, actor Cara Delevingne, and TV personality La La Anthony as their official red carpet hosts, ensuring a vibrant and fashion-forward coverage of the evening.
Tickets for this year’s gala were a reflection of its exclusivity, with prices starting at $100,000 per seat and $350,000 for a table of ten, as reported by the Associated Press.
The “Costume Art” theme is intimately tied to the Met’s upcoming exhibit, which will debut the Costume Institute’s first permanent galleries spanning nearly 12,000 square feet and located near the museum’s Great Hall. Curator Andrew Bolton described this expansion as a transformative moment for both the department and the fashion world, stating, “The fact that an art museum like The Met is actually giving a central location to fashion is monumental.”
The “Costume Art” exhibition will delve into the centrality of the dressed body by pairing historical garments with paintings, sculptures, and artifacts that span a remarkable 5,000 years of artistic expression. Following the Met Gala, the exhibition will run from May 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027.
The 2026 Met Gala delivered an unforgetable evening that blurred the lines between artistry and fashion, while inviting us all to consider how deeply intertwined our expressions of style truly are.
