BARRUS presented its SS27 collection, “The Anatolian Garden,” during London Fashion Week at Fashion Scout, delivering a stunning showcase that blended Turkish heritage with contemporary couture. Inspired by the ageless heritage of Anatolia, envisioned as a living garden, the collection celebrated craftsmanship, innovation and the enduring beauty of the human touch.
Founded in 2015 by Neslisah Yilmaz, a Turkish-British designer with a BSc in Fashion Design and an MSc in Nanotechnology from Marmara University, BARRUS has established a strong global presence over the years. Defined by graceful femininity and an underlying strength, BARRUS Couture has continued to evolve from strength to strength.
Having followed the brand since its early appearances at London Fashion Week, I remember covering its AW17 catwalk collection, which drew inspiration from one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon in Mesopotamia. That fascination with history, culture and extraordinary craftsmanship continues to resonate throughout the BARRUS aesthetic.
“The Anatolian Garden” explored the meeting point between tradition and innovation. Structured corsetry and fluid fabrics were juxtaposed with strong silhouettes and luxurious draping, creating a dynamic sense of movement across the runway. Intricate surface treatments added depth to the garments, while hand-finished details reinforced the collection’s emphasis on craftsmanship.
Fine embellishments, intricate embroidery and floral applications adorned the designs, creating an almost botanical quality that echoed the collection’s garden inspiration. Each look appeared carefully considered, with texture and ornamentation working together to create a rich visual landscape.
For Yilmaz, craftsmanship remains particularly important at a time when the fashion industry is moving at an increasingly rapid pace. The collection places value on techniques that visibly demonstrate the human hand, from elaborate embroidery to detailed embellishment, while simultaneously exploring the possibilities offered by nanotechnology and innovation.
The BARRUS front row reflected the brand’s strong connection with the worlds of fashion, entertainment and society. Among those attending were Absolutely Fabulous legend Helen Lederer, Lady Victoria Hervey, designer Josh Birch, Lady Amelia Windsor and actress Mirabel Stuart, alongside other notable guests.
BARRUS also has a strong celebrity following, with names including Lady Amelia Windsor, Lady Victoria Hervey, Juliet Mayhew, Michelle Keegan and Rochelle Humes among those associated with the brand. Its gowns have appeared on red carpets around the world, reinforcing BARRUS’s position within the contemporary couture landscape.
With ‘The Anatolian Garden’, Neslisah Yilmaz once again brought together heritage, craftsmanship and innovation, creating a collection where the past and future could exist beautifully side by side.
